I'm getting a new job...again
Dec. 14th, 2007 01:17 pmRegular readers will know I have spent the past six months or so working temp for Aquent at the headquarters of the world's largest hardware and home-improvement retailer, helping add how-to pages to their website. (You can see some of them here and here.) This week I was contacted by my former supervisor at that printing firm in town I spent a month working for late last spring, about the time we were hustling to get the Songbird packed up and moved to Nairobi.
You may recall that my stint there as an on-site freelancer was at least partly in the way of an audition for the permanent position they were then looking to fill. I lost out to someone else, but still ended up with a good relationship to build on with the people there...far better than I had realized, in fact. This week, my former supervisor contacted me to let me know the other person had left out of frustration at not being able to do "high-end" design work; personally, I've never been able to understand designers with their snoots up that far in the air—to me, it's all design, even when it's just figuring out how to get someone's name and title to fit on a business-card template. If it's work that pays and keeps me out of boredom and trouble, I do it and smile.
I was also told that, when she asked around the company, my former supervisor had heard nothing but good things from everyone about me. The upshot: They offered me the job, at a pay rate which will start out $2 and change an hour above what I'm getting now and, following the initial probationary period, move up to $4 higher. Union fees are involved, but my and SB's math seems to indicate these won't be that much of a problem.
I start on the 3rd of January and will finish out my temp work commitment to the end of next week, after which SB and I plan to spend the following week and a half driving down to see my family in Louisiana and flying up to hers in New Jersey. I hate to lose the insurance I just started, but the printing company has a plan I can join, I am told. And since my rent is slated to go up with a new lease, plus saving to go visit SB in Africa and paying off various bills and debts, the extra income is sorely needed. (Not to mention making myself whole for the loss of the laptop, meds and assorted peripherals and stuff in the stolen backpack, which I am now in process of doing...and which is why no one but SB—and possibly an immediate family member or two—is getting any Xmas presents from me this year.)
Slowly but surely, little by little, I am working my way back to a normal adult life and professional career.

Date: 2007-12-14 09:32 pm (UTC)When I originally applied for this job, I ended up not getting it 'cause they were already in the process of promoting somebody from inside. Less than six months later, he was gone and they called me to see if I was still interested. When I stopped jumping up and down (which alarmed my neighbors in the advertising cube farm) and said "Yes", that led to a whirlwind trip for interviewing and a job which, 11 years later, I still love.
I wish for you the same happiness in your new job that I found in this one! :-)
