Courtesy of the Arisia e-mail list by way of [info]tigerbright, I have just learned that Lois Mangan is in a hospice. (Previous reports of her being near death are now said to have been exaggerated, and I apologize for unduly alarming people.) This is a tremendous shock, as I recall Lois and her husband Paul quite fondly from years of attending cons and filk events in the Boston area and southward, and I had not possessed the least inkling that she was sick. I am reliably informed that I can post the information on the hospice:
Chilton House
65 Chilton St., Cambridge, MA 02138
(617) 661-6415
Preferred visiting hours are 9:30 am to 8:30 pm.

If you are in the neighborhood, visitors are encouraged; if not, prayers and good thoughts are welcome.

And Discworld series author Terry Pratchett has been diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer's disease, but is likewise nowhere near dying, as he is at pains to assure us in a letter posted here. Prayers and good thoughts also requested for him, and thanks to [personal profile] khaosworks for the heads-up.

Um... I left that entry friends-only, most folks won't be able to see it.

Also, update from Lois' husband (he has LJ but prefers not to publicize it widely):
I think Phil may have jumped the gun. Lois suffered another
setback while in the rehab facility in Brookline - gastrointestinal
bleeding (probably an ulcer) complicated by aspiration of bloody
vomit (which may lead to another pneumonia). Lois is depressed
as hell and is currently receiving comfort-only care. But this may
change (if Lois so decides), and she is NOT at death's door yet.
Her family and I have some hope for more time with her.

Um, I have a newborn - please just repost the text of Jill Eastlake's letter and don't refer folks to me?

Oh, dear. I do keep putting my foot in it this morning, don't I? I'm sorry, I forgot your current state. But I'm not sure I should post that letter given the more current information, nor do I wish to put the information out there for the whole world without the Mangans' consent. Is there someone else I could refer people to?

Um, Jill put the letter out to be disseminated. It's been sent to many mailing lists and many LJs already.

Okay, one more post beginning with "Um..." and I'm officially checking myself in to see the brain surgeon. If you're sure it truly is okay, I may post the link; right now, I'm on the verge of simply deleting the whole damn thing since I seem to do nothing but screw it up. Anyhow, I'm not on the list, so I can't link to it.
