Catastrophe
Dec. 2nd, 2007 03:41 pmI believe my laptop and the backpack it was in have been stolen.
Right from the parking lot outside my apartment building, where I evidently left it by mistake after putting it down to open the car door, getting in and driving off. Leaving it there just long enough for someone to come along, spot it and decide this was their lucky day.
With all kinds of crucial personal information not only of mine, but of the Songbird's too, with which whoever got it, or gets it next, could wreak all kinds of havoc upon us both.
And to cap stupidity upon stupidity, I made the mistake of putting ALL my just-bought medications in the backpack with the laptop in it. So now those are gone, too. Over $270 worth of drugs I shall have to replace. (No, of course I didn't have renter's insurance. That would have been too sensible.) Plus my cell-phone charger, headphones, portable flash drive and assorted other accessories.
I am in the process of changing any and all passwords I can think of that might have been stored on the machine, and called the police. Sometime today, one hopes, an officer will come by to take the report.
Trying desperately to keep perspective; I know it's hardly the worst possible thing that could have happened to me. I still have life, limb, fair health, clothes and food and shelter, and gainful employment.
But nonetheless, I am still angry at myself and frantic. Please bear with me.

Date: 2007-12-02 08:59 pm (UTC)Maybe, hopefully, another tenant noticed and took it with them to work/shopping and when they'll get home they'll return it?
I wish you the best with this :(

Date: 2007-12-03 12:33 am (UTC)I hope you merely misplaced it (say, in the car). And if not, who knows, maybe you'll get someone honest. Or else they'll get boils in sensitive places.
*Sending good thoughts and wishes and huggage*

Date: 2007-12-03 04:07 am (UTC)Check nearby dumpsters; they might have taken the laptop and dumped the bag with the meds. I've heard of purse-snatchers doing that sort of thing (the purse, or backpack in your case, being more easily spotted than the contents).

- asking the building superintendent if anyone has turned it in
- putting up a note in the building lobby, "Lost: backpack with laptop", etc. Possibly also "reward" and/or "no questions asked"
She mentions all the kinds of things that we have found and returned, including a purse, a watch, a wallet, a tricycle, and a pet bunny. And we've had returned to us a wallet, a notebook, and other things.
(We also put up signs about Ista, but no one came forth with a credible claim.)
Good thoughts and wishes.
