Of all the brands of guitars out there, electric and acoustic, none is more renowned among professional musicians than Gibson.† And of all Gibson's models, none is more legendary than the Gibson Les Paul.

And now it's going robotic.

Is this an SF story begging to be written by some gifted filker, or what?

Except maybe Fender. (Happy now, [personal profile] filkerdave? :-) )

Personally, I think it needs to be a story written by William Gibson.

Even if I quibble with your "none is more renowned" bit... ;)

Really? Any nominees for a better candidate?

Dunno about better, but how about Fender being at least equal?

Okay, I'll buy that. Between the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul, you got about two-thirds of your history of plugged rock'n'roll right there.

"Professional musicians" =/= "plugged rock'n'roll" Sure, you can go for the latter -- but the former includes all the zillions of country (and western, let's not forget the other sort of music :-) , blues, etc. musicians out there. I've suggested some brands that those folks use, in large measure.

Sorry about that; point taken—I tend not to think of country/western, blues, folk etc. artists as using electric guitars for the most part, although I realize a few at least do. (Is B. B. King's Lucille an electric? I forget.) Rock and pop seems to be where the largest concentration of electrics is generally.

Oh, yes. The blues is practically what the electric guitar was BUILT for. Lucille had better be electric; look at her and see if you see soundholes. (Answer: nope.) c.f. Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page for two blues guitarists also known for their rock'n'rolling whose fame derives primarily from electrics (in both milieux).

Martin. The Martin O-15 is legendary as a fingerpicker's favorite.

And I've already written a song and story about a guitar with robotics and AI.

Christian Friedrich Martin? Senior through the IV. And all the non-C.F.'s who've also piloted the family-run factory since 1833.

Granted, the electric versions weren't nearly as exquisite as the acoustic ones, but still .. .

In the interest of full disclosure, the D12-28 12-string on the left and the Style B mandolin in the userpic are Martins, as is the 00-1R I'm playing in my default, portrait user icon.

Guild. Gretsch. And, especially, Rickenbacker.

All of them are candidates for "as renowned" -- depending on the musicians you poll.

I'm sure I've missed some high-end names, best known among the actual pros.

*slaps head*

I could'a launched a V8. You are 100% correct, that name should have been top of the list.
