It is my sad duty to report that novelist, playwright and commentator Norman Mailer has died at 84 of kidney failure, two days ago in New York's Mount Sinai Hospital. Reuters' obituary is here.
Colleague Jimmy Breslin said of him, "From one end of his life to the other he sat in solemn thought and left so much to read, so many pages with ideas that come at you like sparks spitting from a fire." That and two Pulitzer Prizes say far more about his life and career than I ever could.
ADDENDUM, 5:19 PM: Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post blog site, has posted an excellent appreciation of Mailer from a personal friend's perspective here.
