Happy birthday to a man who is both a talented singer/songwriter and a dear friend, [personal profile] filkerdave! Hope you have a marvelous day with your also-very-cool sons...and anyone else you want in it.

The science fiction writing community has lost a genuine talent. Janet Kagan, author of the 1987 Pocket Books Star Trek novel Uhura's Song among others, has died after a long struggle with acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (Notice courtesy of [personal profile] supergee by way of [profile] james_nicoll by way of a post by Ellen Datlow on sff.net relayed from Susan Casper.)

I met her once at a Worldcon a few years back, and she was very gracious and friendly to a fan who had only read the one book by her. I was sorely disappointed to learn she was not planning to write any more novels featuring those characters she created for it...and now there never will be, unless some other writer in Pocket's stable somehow gets permission and can recapture what she gave them. My heart goes out to her family, friends, colleagues and fans in this difficult hour.

By eerie coincidence, Amazon has recently put out a Kindle edition of the book, as well as offering the original paperback; I highly recommend it. "Tail-Kinker-to-Ennien out"...for the very last time.
