Six years ago this day...
Sep. 11th, 2007 08:55 am...I was living in an apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, when a phone call from my sister-in-law in Louisiana woke me after 9:00 AM (I was still unemployed and sleeping late a lot) to make sure I was all right, telling me to turn on the TV news. I did so just in time to see an unspeakable horror that will live forever in my nightmares: the World Trade Center towers, just across the East River from me, collapsing with God alone knew how many people still inside.
On this sixth anniversary, let us remember all who died—at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and among the heroic resisters of United Airlines Flight 93 in a Pennsylvania pasture. And all those who have died and been injured since to stamp out terrorism and apprehend those responsible, in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. And pray that our troops in harm's way now may be allowed to come home for good, very soon.
