As promised, the weekly feature of STTL Fridays is hereby officially inaugurated. You all know the topics I like to beat to death —err, discuss frequently here. And I have some idea of what you all are interested in that you've posted here. What's missing from this picture? Is there anything about me you've just been dying to know? Any part of the passing political/cultural parade I've missed seeing? Any good jokes (or bad puns) you know I haven't heard? C'mon, folks, this is your day to take the reins.

Music: "Starsoul" by Jodi Krangle ©1997-2007 / New Lyrics: Matt G. Leger
Inspired by the DreamWorks SKG motion picture GalaxyQuest and written from the POV of Jason Nesmith, AKA Capt. Peter Quincy Taggart
The ship is untried, and you say we can't fly;
The chances are good we'll be blown from the sky.
She was based on a model of plastic, not steel,
But some-how these aliens have made her real!
Chorus / So show us the enemy, give us the ship,
God only knows why we're making this trip.
You say we're just actors, forgotten and old,
But our greatest adventure has yet to unfold!
Our new friends so trusting, some would say naïve,
But all those old broadcasts they really believe;
Their faith is so strong -- how can we let them down?
We're all that they've got; no one else is around!
Repeat Chorus
It's been eighteen years, and I've gotten a gut;
Now there's no stunt double, no one to yell "Cut!"
Gwen, Tommy and Fred, even Guy -- they're all here,
And Dane is still bitching for his lost career.
Repeat Chorus
So here we all are, set to fight for our lives
With no script to tell us who dies or survives.
Can we be true saviors? At least we can try,
With "Never surrender!" as our battle cry.
Repeat Chorus
Final Chorus / And we faced the enemy, we flew the ship;
God only knows how we lived through that trip.
We left has-been actors, came back heroes bold --
And our greatest adventures have yet to unfold!

Date: 2007-10-20 12:57 am (UTC)CD: Con Suite, Emerald Rose, 2007
Available at band website (http://www.emeraldrose.com)
Rating: 5 of 5 stars (5 = "must buy" to 1 = "don't bother")
This is a special album for the group of men who've come to be known as Dragon*Con's unofficial house band: Brian Sullivan, Arthur Hinds, Larry Morris and Clyde Gilbert. Unlike the rest of their output, which generally puts a modern, rocking twist on Irish/Scots classic traditional songs (one of their earlier CDs is titled Bending Tradition), this one is explicitly for the most loyal and enthusiastic of the various types of audiences they've played for over the years (as their website notes, "Irish pubs and festivals, sci-fi conventions, and Hollywood cast parties"), namely the SF/fantasy fans who come to see them most often. All the songs on it focus on SF or fantasy themes; one, "Vampire Girl from Orn," appeared on the earlier live-in-concert disc Fire in the Head, and remains my favorite. However, the truly sick combo of lyrics from "Danny Boy" and music from "Whiskey in the Jar" called "Danny in the Jar" has now wormed its way into my head permanently, and the modern laments "Fairies Stole My Keys" and "No Booze Today" resonate as well. There's songs for the Harry Potter fans ("Chocolate Frog"), Firefly Browncoats ("Big Damn Heroes"), gamers ("Never Split the Party"), and one for all those who've wondered just how the producers of Enterprise justified all those skivvy-shots of a certain pointy-eared female officer in decontam ("Vulcan Rubdown").
The boys obviously have a metric buttload of fun whenever they perform, as anyone who's seen them live knows, and that comes through on this CD. No nits whatsoever that I can find to pick with instrumentation, songcraft, sound quality or production values; these guys are pros...but pros who haven't forgotten or forsaken their fannish friends, and that shows as well. Buy the damn thing already!
