I bet lots of people watching TV in my home state of Louisiana are going to be peevishly writing, faxing and/or e-mailing Tim Kring tonight.
Evidently he didn't do his homework on New Orleans carefully enough, because in tonight's episode of his NBC series Heroes, which he wrote himself, he has one of his characters who lives there utter the phrase, "Half the people in this county live in FEMA trailers." (Emphasis mine.)

Anyone who has spent any time at all in Louisiana, or even just frickin' read Wikipedia's page about it, knows that the Pelican State is the only one in the Union that does not have counties. Instead, it has parishes, a holdover from the French colonial days and the Napoleonic code on which the state's law is based (not to mention the strong Roman Catholic influence of both the French and Spanish periods). Thus, New Orleans is located in Orleans Parish, not Orleans County.

Aargh. Geeze Louise, these Hollywood people... And it was a reasonably good ep otherwise. (Sorry, no spoilers here yet; I know some are time-shifting.) I can't believe a mistake this egregious made it to air, but I'm going to assume enough others noticed and will complain that I don't need to. One hopes Mr. K. will see to it that it's corrected when this season's shows make it to DVD.

I noticed that, too. And I've never even been to Louisiana. It's even worse cause Tim Kring actually wrote that ep.

That was an "argh!" moment for me, too. And did you notice the new hero's friend-since-kindergarten who sounded like she just got here from Mississippi?

Yeah, I know; can't expect everything!

Maybe the producers didn't want to confuse the majority of the viewers? That's the usual explanation for getting things horribly wrong about Scotland.

Dude! Please LJ-cut anything spoilerific. I'm not horribly put out by most spoilers, but there are folks who'll scream and yell if they think you're even hinting at spoiling something for them. (Me, I just got home from work, and am going to torrent the show and watch it in a bit.)

Thanks.

I had thought I was being careful enough for most viewers, but if you think even this is too much to leave uncut, so be it. Cut added, with apologies.

Thanks.

This particular information isn't a serious spoiler, AFAIK and IMO. It's just a really good habit to get into, even for minor discussions that bear on current or near-current material.

These would of course be the same Hollywood people who accomplished what WMATA couldn't and placed a Metro station in Georgetown... ;-)
