That's the date the 12th original studio album by Alfred Matthew Yankovic hits the stores. Its title is Straight Outta Lynwood, and it will include parodies of hits by Chamillionaire, Green Day, Usher, R. Kelly and American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. (Sadly, it will not include Al's recent MySpace-posted parody "You're Pitiful," due to lack of a sense of humor on the part of James Blunt's record label.) The Weird One is offering the opportunity to pre-order the CD, listen to and/or download the first single now, and collect other information vital to your existence here.

Longtime friends will know I have been a fan since the earliest days when Al was sending (via "snail mail," not uploading) tapes recorded in his college radio station's bathroom to Barret "Dr. Demento" Hansen for airing on his radio show. Longtime Al-fen will also know that he has never failed to give a shout-out to the good Doctor in his liner notes. Nice to see he doesn't forget where he started; now if only we could get him to adjust his attitude with regard to filk...

Doesn't like it, won't cop to being part of it, and cool at best to use of his work in it. You can probably find references if you back-search rec.music.filk on Usenet.

Oy. Well, no one's perfect.

Come to think of it, I don't classify his music as filk in my collection...it's "comedy." The distinction is that filk is, in my mind, music performed by filkers, and I never considered him a filker.

I guess it's the lack of personal association with conventions and the...*cough* con game.

Er, as I heard the story, James Blunt said OK, and it was his record label who nixed the permissions.
