In which Your Humble Correspondent tries to encourage increased literacy (not that the lack of same is anywhere near a possibility with most of his readership) and arm his progressive/liberal readers with intellectual ammunition for political debate.
New York Times
syndicated columnist Paul Krugman has just put out this week's new book, The Conscience of A Liberal (whose title echoes the late Sen. Barry Goldwater's similar tome, The Conscience of A Conservative, in what one suspects is not an accident). The book is Krugman's response to those on the right who told him after Junior Bush was re-elected in 2004 that he should basically just shut the hell up because the majority had ruled. 2006's midterm rout of the GOP Congress put the lie to that assertion and gave Krugman the impetus to argue that it was not an aberration, but rather the backswing of the pendulum away from an era of conservative hegemony that started with the Reagan Administration.

Also out this week is Common Ground: How to Stop the Partisan War That Is Destroying America, by print/TV pundits Cal Thomas (right) and Bob Beckel (left). Apparently now repenting of the political polarization to which they admit having contributed, the two men now argue that consensus is all that can save America from ruin. Taken in part from their shared USA Today column of the same title, the book looks at how the divide came about and how it can be circumvented on all the big-ticket issues.
