Months ago, Apple Inc. announced its next major upgrade to the Mac OS, code-named Leopard, would be out in October 2007. We are now one full week into that month, and still Apple has not revealed precisely when in the month this long-awaited upgrade will be released. The consensus among the trade press seems to be that they will do it late in the month, around the 26th or so (see MacRumors report here), but no official word has yet come from Cupertino.

Am I the only one who finds it astonishing that this close to the announced time, we still have no actual date? I know Steve Jobs likes to build anticipation, but jeezam crickets, they're cutting it awful damn close...especially with the retail-crucial holiday season coming up.

Well, I'm not certain but I thought there was mention that due to the iPhone the Leopard release was pushed out with no specific date indicated.

October is the pushed-out date... the original target was WWDC this summer and that's the release that was ostensibly delayed by iPhone development.

As an acolyte of the Order of the Two St. Stevens (Jobs & Wozniak), I have come to know that target dates are sometimes jumped and sometimes missed. I'm just going to presume that any unveiling delay will only work in favour of the consumers in the form of OS updates that don't have to be e-mailed out. I wasn't going to upgrade to Leopard until at least 10.5.1 or .2, just to be sure. It took me a couple of months to get used to OS-X (Panther) after being completely at ease with OS-9. I let Tiger go by becuase I saw no clear benefit over Panther, and honestly Leopard will have to prove itself some time next year fwen I switch over to that. Wait and see is the watchword (no, that's three watchwords. Doh!)
