Many thanks to [personal profile] autographedcat and [personal profile] kitanzi for hosting Movie Night at their place last night (they plan to make it a weekly event; if you're local or planning to be in the Atlanta area on a Wednesday night, check with them). Also present were [personal profile] joyeuse13 and her husband, and a friend of theirs I don't know as well, and a reasonably good time was had by all.

And even more thanks to our host and hostess for introducing me to Hot Fuzz, a hilarious movie satire I almost got to see in a free preview screening a couple months back but passed on. Silly, silly graphic artist! This little gem is from the same guys who gave you Shaun of the Dead, and now I have to see that one (even as much as I loathe zombie flicks, and horror flicks in general) to find out if it's as funny as this one. The new movie purposely hits every buddy-cop-movie cliché of the past couple of decades—and gives each a new twist or a surprise outcome.

Simon Pegg
stars as a cop's cop on the London police service (they don't say "force" anymore; too militaristic) whose outstanding, by-the-book performance makes all the other cops look bad. So he's reassigned to a seemingly sleepy little country town—only to find things aren't quite as peaceful and bucolic as one would expect...! Nick Frost is a standout as the somewhat nebbishy local cop who befriends Our Hero, with top-drawer support by veterans Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton and Edward (The Equalizer) Woodward, among others. (Warning for the squeamish: there are one or two rather gruesome scenes...and I could swear I saw one of them recreated last month in a hall costume at Dragon*Con. Probably not near as many as in Shaun, I imagine.)

Kit and I between us got off two one-liners that were better (or worse, depending on how you feel about [vile] puns) than anything in the movie: "Rest in peas..." (me) and "A mine is a terrible thing to waste" (Kit). If you've seen it, you can probably figure out where these occurred (both near the end); if not, I won't spoil the movie for you by explaining here—just go see the bloody thing already. A treat any time you want to curl up with some popcorn and have a few good laughs.

What's the funniest, or just the most entertaining, movie you've seen lately?

If you see "Shaun of the Dead" you have to see it WITH the DVD extras.
I especially liked the section that explains how certain people survive (or didn't).
