Was listening to one on my iPod shuffle just now and found myself trying to come up with nine more to go with it. (Can you tell I've been doing LJ memes too long?) These are feel-good songs to me, ones that fill me with the urge not just to dance, but start a musical-movie production number in the halls and lead everyone out into the street for the big finish. These are songs that uplift me with their sheer exuberance and convince me life just might be worth living for one more day. In no particular order, here they are, and why. Post your own set on your LJ page.
- "Do I Do" - Stevie Wonder
The most upbeat, "happy" song I know. Get the longer album version with the Dizzy Gillespie horn solo, or you're missing half the fun.
- "Walking On Sunshine" - Katrina & the Waves
Makes you feel the writer must really have been in love working on it.
- "Celebration" - Kool & the Gang
Just what the title implies, by one of the Disco Era's premier funkifiers.
- "Jump" - The Pointer Sisters
Anita, Ruth and June at the height of their popularity and talents.
- "Bang On the Drum All Day" - Todd Rundgren
A great slacker anthem...or just a TGIF song for week's end.
- "Living In America" - James Brown
Soul Brother #1 (God rest him) celebrates our country, from the Rocky IV soundtrack.
- "Missing You" - Tina Turner
The old John Waite tune, given a wallop as only Miss Tina knows how.
- "Hip to Be Square" - Huey Lewis & the News
Geek chic celebrated by the official house band for the 1980s.
- "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves" - Aretha Franklin & Eurythmics
Annie Lennox and the Queen of Soul reminding us guys of what we should never forget, with Dave Stewart's instrumental virtuosity backing them.
- "New Attitude" - Patti LaBelle
Patti's gospel-trained vocal power in the service of self-remaking. What more could you possibly want?
