Superman's dad is dead
Aug. 31st, 2006 08:40 amReuters reports today that Glenn Ford has passed away at the age of 90. One of Canada's finest exports, he played many roles in a long and varied career...but to those of us who still consider "funny books" a legitimate art/literature form, he will always and forever be most closely identified with one: Jonathan Kent, the wise and kindly foster father to the Man of Steel in Superman: The Movie (1978). With all due respect to John Schneider's by-no-means-lacking performance in the same role on TV's Smallville, when I think of young Clark listening to his "Pa" dispensing sage advice, it is Mr. Ford's gentle voice I hear in my head: "You were put on this Earth for a reason...and it's not to score touchdowns." That he never received an Oscar is to the Academy's eternal shame.
