Saw in my local paper today, but not on their website, an interesting perspective from an Asian-American columnist who has both gender- and ethnicity-based interests in the subject:

interesting. I too remember when cheap toys were marked "made in Hong Kong". Just before that they were "Made in Japan".

Now "made in Japan" means reasonably high quality electronics and "made in Hong Kong" means quality fashion accessories.
