From today's letters page in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a message from the governor of my stricken home state that makes me almost as proud to be a present-day Atlantan as I am to be a former New Orleanian:
Amid a state's grief, heartfelt thanks
Hurricane Katrina still conjures powerful memories of the best and worst that life can deliver. Now, a year later, we pause and remember.
We grieve for those departed and our inestimable loss. We thank those whose heroic and selfless acts meant survival and hope. We celebrate miracles and victories that support our belief in the resilience and power of the human spirit.
On behalf of the people of Louisiana, I extend deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the people of Atlanta. You welcomed into your community so many Louisiana families suffering from great loss.
I urge Louisianans to return home and become an active part of Louisiana's promising future. Our communities are not the same without you. And to the people of Atlanta, please keep us in your lives --- continue your generous volunteer efforts that support our recovery --- and please keep us in your prayers, so that we may have endurance and strength to continue each day making real our dream of a safer, smarter and stronger Louisiana.
