Two things accomplished today

Got the DSL back on, and now I have successfully upgraded my laptop's RAM to its full capacity. A short trip to Fry's and about $90 got me 2 GB for the Dell. It does appear to be perceptibly faster in operation...and hopefully no more molasses-in-January "virtual memory too low" incidents will occur. Next week, we do the same for the Mac so I can finally install Illustrator CS3.

Actually, "virtual memory too low" errors are hard-drive related (although upping the RAM ought to help delay them). They result from the swap file being overloaded (as when you are working with a large Photoshop file, with lots of levels of undo available). Keeping Firefox open for very long times tends to get them, too, though less so if you have v.2 and have followed online advice about "memory leaks". (Check your processes to see how large they are; I've seen FF get to over 300,000K in memory usage, and that kills the system.)

No cracks about Illustrator, tonight. Fish. Barrel. etc. :-)

I had forgotten there was one, and had no reminders. Besides, I couldn't have come anyhow; I had to stick around home most of the day waiting for the fershlugginer AT&T guy to come fix my DSL. (He was supposed to have been and gone by noon, but they seem to be about as good as Comcast at meeting such windows.)
