Mary's first update from Kenya
Aug. 13th, 2006 03:16 pmI have finally received the first of what is likely to be a string of E-mail updates from ny sweet Songbird (
singing_phoenix) on her experience working in Nairobi, Kenya for the Global AIDS Project. Text follows:
Hi,Matt!
I'm settling in...work on Friday was fairly light, mostly reading up on rthe programs. Yesterday we went on a game drive in Nairobi Nartional Park, and saw zebra, ostrich, bushbucks, water buffalo, giraffes and gazelles. It's odd to see the wildlife with the city skyline in the background - a reminder of how close we are to nature. After the game drive, we visited a giraffe sanctuary, where we got to handfeed the giraffes - greedy things, with imposssibly long black tongues. We also stopped in to see the Isak Dinesen house; the grounds were used in the film "Out of Africa", which is based on her most famous book.
I won't have an APO address for at least a week, but here's the mailing address at the apartments:
Mary Mulholland
Apartment #42
YaYa Apartments
PO box 76377-00508
Nairobi Kenya
You already have the phone number.
The apartments are really nice - hardwood floors, a big living/dining room, lots of windows, a kitchen with a microwave as well as a range, my own bathroom...it's nicer than what we have in Atlanta. There'a a mall next door, and a big supermarket a half-mile away, so I'm pretty well set. My roomate Sonja is great and has been showing me around.
We're going to the Carnivore restaurant this evening - this is the big thing as they have all sorts of exotic meats on the menu (ostrich, crocodile) as well as more mundane offerings like beef. They used to serve impala and zebra, but they aren't allowed to anymore - which may be just as well, as the restaurant is right next door the game park, which raises questions about where they got their supply. I'll tell you about it later.
I love and miss you - I'll write more later!
Always,
m
