FireDogLake.com, one of my favorite lefty blog aggregators (is there a better name for sites consisting of a whole mess of individual bloggers' contributions? "Blog anthology"? "Blog collection"? "Mega-blog"?), today features this column by a blogger usernamed "Scarecrow" about the ongoing struggle between the Democrat-led 110th Congress and Junior Bush over funding the continuing US occupation of Iraq. Having pulled out his veto pen for only the second time in two terms to kibosh the original "timetable" bill, Bush is now threatening to veto yet again if Pelosi, Reid & Co. send him anything but the "blank check" he wants to wage war without end. Worth reading.

Any attempt, it seems, to enact any kind of remotely reasonable program to ensure that our troops get to come home anytime soon (read: before Bush has to leave office), or even to ensure that we are getting the best non-bang for our military bucks (i.e., an end or at least a reduction in the sectarian strife), will be met with hostility by this President and his cadre of neocon warmongers. Plainly, nothing will satisfy them but a bill which allows them to A) claim the "surge" is working, B) keep access to all that luscious oil beneath the Iraqi sands, and C) maintain Bush's soi-disant "war president" status throughout the remainder of his final term, enabling all sorts of mischief a peacetime president can't get away with.

George Orwell, get up out of that grave and call your office; you were spot-on in your book 1984, except for being just under two decades off in forecasting when it would happen.

Always With the Neocons.

FDL is a blog. It has lots of contributors, but that's not at all uncommon (see Making Light, Crooked Timber, Hullaballoo, etc.). Some of them also have their own individual blogs, or contribute elsewhere. That's also not uncommon. Call it a multi-person blog if you wish, to distinguish it from a personal blog. It's a very good one (although I could wish the commenters would stay more on topic).

I hope Pelosi and Reid hold the ship on course. They keep sending bills to fund the troops, and Georgie Porgie keeps vetoing them. That works out that someone's not supporting the troops, but it's not the guys sending the bills.

The message needs to continue: No more blank checks; put up or shut up, and get out soonest.

Bush sees the idea of supporting the troops as continuing the war effort.
Most sane people see it as bringing them safely home.

Yep. The Bush Baby is unsuitable for the office; it's just a shame he was able to steal the 2004 election and to stay there without serious movements for impeachment until too recently.
