Music survey: Belters
May. 6th, 2007 10:30 pmYou know who I mean. The ones with the big, BIG singing voices that can put a shiver up your spine or a lump in your throat when they really let go with all the power of their lungs, their training and experience and their vocal chords, and have a really good song to work with. The ones who can shake the rafters, bring crowds of thousands to their feet and send one showstopping moment of music into the history books and sear it into people's memories forever.
Patti LaBelle is one (lots of 'em got their start like she did, in gospel and church choirs; cf. Aretha Franklin). So's k.d. lang. And Céline Dion. And Tina Turner. And Donna Summer, though her voice had to fight its way past overproduced disco rhythms most of the time. Jennifer Holliday is another, though most people only know it because of her one solitary hit. And Streisand. And Liza Minnelli, when she's got a mind to. They tend way more often to be women than men, for some reason; maybe it takes a really high range to do it well. The late, great and dearly missed Sammy Davis Jr. was one. Josh Groban probably could be one, if he wanted to. And Elton John has his moments.
So, who's your favorite belter? And what song by her/him is your favorite, and why?
