Today Apple Inc. announced changes to its environmental-impact policies, as MacMinute.com notes here. While the Cupertino colossus has long prided itself on being not only Cali-hip but Kelly green, the global enviro/animal-rights group Greenpeace International has placed them at or near the top of its list of worst computer-industry environmental offenders, based on way stricter standards than Apple's for what constitutes a truly "green" company. Chief among GPI's peeves with the Home of the Macintosh are continued use of toxic chemicals in manufacturing computers and monitors, and poorly implemented take-back policies for its older and obsolete models.

CEO Steve Jobs, personally penning the statement announcing the changes, insists that his own investigation has found Apple to be leading or on the way to leading the industry in sustainable and pollution-minimizing practices, but admits that there is still room for improvement. Remaining to be seen is (a) how well Apple will follow through on honoring its promises to improve and (b) whether this will be enough to move Apple to Greenpeace's "good" list.
