Am I the only one who wonders how much of the current flap over World Bank prexy and former Deputy SecDef Paul Wolfowitz is really about what he may or may not have done in his current job, and how much is anger over what he did do in his last job? He was one of the neocons who pushed and planned the invasion of Iraq in Junior Bush's first term. Far as I can tell, the only thing he's actually guilty of in his current gig is getting his girlfriend a job. While nepotism is certainly unfair and unethical, it does seem rather insufficient to bring about the breadth and intensity of calls for his head on a platter I'm seeing reported in the news media. I'm just sayin'...

Sidebar: Just got an e-mail about an "emergency rally" of antiwar activists scheduled for tomorrow here in Atlanta, part of a whole bunch of such gatherings being called around the country the same day. The idea is to pressure Congress into overriding the veto Junior has promised to slap on the current "timetable" spending bill and bringing our involvement with this particular international-political tar baby to a speedy end. Debating with myself whether I should attend; will keep y'all posted.

I actually dont even think he's guilty of that. I thought he met her at the Bank (and I may be wrong) but the gripe is about the size of the raises he got her.

What annoys me is he apparently was up front with people when it happened. He was saying, "She's my girlfriend. I may have a conflict of interest. How should I handle it?", and he followed instructions.

Yeah, it is unseemly, but he dealt with it. I'm not sure what else he could have done short of quit when they started dating.
