"Courageous, principled jurist" (adjectival noun) - A judge who rules in favor of a conservative position on a legal or political issue.

"Arrogant judicial activist" (adjectival noun) - Antonym of above. A judge who rules against the conservative position on a legal or political issue, i.e., in favor of or seeming to be in favor of the liberal position.

You mean like the activist judge just nominated for Attorney General because he once placed the law above his personal feelings? (And later, called the Geneva Convention "quaint". Yes, it's possible to be complex in one's feelings. Or maybe he was just required to say so by his boss.)
