For over four decades, the notion of there being a Democratic National Convention without at least one member of New England's first family of politics being involved (and usually more than one) has been unimaginable. And this week's edition of the quadrennial confab in Denver is no exception; tonight Bobby Kennedy's son, Rep. Robert Jr., spoke on the proposed energy plan offered by this year's presumptive nominee, Sen. Barack Obama. And then later, after a brief introduction by his niece Caroline and a five-minute tribute video featuring party luminaries such as John Lewis and former nominee John Kerry, the paterfamilias himself, Sen. Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy, was introduced.

Rumors had been flying and speculation was rife as to whether the ailing 76-year-old solon, who has just come out of surgery to remove a brain tumor two months ago, would be present in corpus or only in spirit. But there he was, looking every inch the hale, hearty old liberal lion of the Senate as he stood, his snow-white mane of hair flowing over a crisp navy suit, for about 10 minutes and gave a rousing endorsement of Obama.

Sadly, as I was attempting to tape the tribute segment, the cassette ran out. I am hoping to find a copy of it online somewhere or other, as the Songbird wants to see it too and cannot from where she is. Say what you will about his past, about his policies, about his tactics on the Hill—and you can say plenty about all three—you gotta give the guy props for sheer endurance, grit and gumption.
