Dear Ms. Tucker:

As the presumptive nominees for President continue to campaign, the economy continues to slide downward and Sen. Barack Obama continues to look more and more like actually winning, the whistling past the graveyard of Republicans and conservatives gets louder and more desperate...not to mention dumber. Witness the comparison of Obama to Paris Hilton by Sen. John McCain's campaign and your own colleague Jim Wooten's column of today, in which he insists Obama cannot win over middle America because he won't "stick to the 'I love America' script" without adding "conditions and qualifiers [and] lawyered-up codicils."

If saying that one loves America without any qualification whatsoever is, as Wooten claims, "a threshold requirement" for being elected President, then why would anyone even bother to run? The very act of entering the race implies that one is not entirely satisfied with America as it is and thinks one can make it better than those currently in charge. Wooten's view is also alarmingly out of touch with the very mainstream citizenry on whose pulse he claims to have his finger; poll after poll shows majorities discontent with the current direction and state of the nation. Please tell him: Jim, contrary to what you obviously think, it is entirely possible to sincerely love your country and criticize its government at the same time.

This is the second or third column now that Wooten has written declaring that Obama cannot win in Georgia and/or the rest of the country ("Georgia is not in play"). That, to me, is a sure sign that what he says is emphatically not so...but then, I need barrels of salt for most of what he writes.

Sincerely,
TCC

Isaac Hayes, singer/composer and owner of the smoothest soul-filled voice this side of the late Barry White—singing or speaking—has died at 65 in a Memphis hospital after collapsing in his home. Cause of death was not immediately reported; CNN.com has a report here.

From his now-famous "Theme from Shaft" to his gigs as the voice of South Park's Chef, he was a part of our culture for nearly four decades. I'm really, really ready for the Universe to stop taking the good ones away from us any day now.
