thatcrazycajun: (birthday)
Happy, happy birthday to two very good people, dear friends (the former of whom I am just now realizing I have known for the better part of two decades now [!!]), tireless contributors to the filk community...oh, yeah—and very talented musicians: [personal profile] eftychia and [personal profile] quadrivium! Here's wishing you both everything you hope for out of the day.

Praise be to God under all Her many names—and, more importantly, to Derrick Eisenhardt and his team at HumanIT, the folks who manage our tech support at my employer—my Sony VAIO laptop computer is back in my hands and working again under Vista. (You damn betcha I'm making a boot disc for future emergencies now; had I had one last weekend, Derrick's services might not have been as badly needed.)

It was a faster job than Worst Buy would have offered (even had I been able to find the sales receipt to prove they sold me the silly thing not three months ago, the warranty is from the manufacturer, not them; coverage under the store's warranty beyond 30 days costs extra) and for about what their Geek Squad guy told me it would cost just to run an "advanced diagnostic" and get it back in 5-10 business days...assuming they didn't lose mine like that poor person who sued them recently. And this way, I get to deal with someone I know and trust both in character and ability.

He was even willing to leave it for me to find today, despite having got to the office after I had left for a medical appointment when he returned it yesterday. (Then again, he does know where I work, so collections certainly isn't a problem...) If you live and/or work in the Atlanta metro area —heck, even if you don't and are willing to deal with distance communication and shipping—and need some IT help, these guys most thoroughly rock...and hard, like unto a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. (Yeah, I know, 2/3 of my f-list don't need anyone's help with computer stuff, but even the most advanced techie can have problems that exceed their knowledge.) Consider tossing some business their way and tell 'em Matt from Superior sent you.

This story from ZDNet describes exactly what happened to my Sony VAIO laptop last Sunday:
Users report Microsoft's latest Windows Vista Service Pack update causes "endless reboot loop"
Well, at least I know now the hardware wasn't at fault...
