Responding to a conservative's bald-faced lies about liberalism

What follows is the text of a letter I sent to our local paper regarding a letter from a reader printed in today's dead-tree edition (the website's "Letters to the Editor" section is about a day behind). Due to their 150-word limit on letters, it will be severely bowdlerized if it appears in print at all, so I am posting it here to get it off my chest. (Responses welcomed, even from conservatives who feel I've maligned them unfairly--yes, a_phoenix_afire, I'm looking at you. :-) )
